McTimoney Chiropractic

Expert Chiropractic for Back Pain & Sports Injuries - Reigate & Redhill

McTimoney Chiropractic care is an evidence-informed, non-pharmacological and non-surgical method used to effectively assess, treat, manage, and prevent a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal disorders. By optimising spinal and joint function, it frequently helps patients avoid or postpone surgical procedures while promoting long-term mobility and well-being.

What Is a McTimoney Chiropractor?

McTimoney Chiropractic is a gentle, whole-body approach to chiropractic care that focuses on precise, light adjustments to the spine and other joints. It aims to restore proper alignment, improve nerve function, relieve discomfort, enhance mobility, and support the body’s natural ability to heal. At Startline, we use McTimoney Chiropractic to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal issues (problems arising from the bones, joints, muscles, and nervous system that affect movement and function), from everyday aches and postural imbalances to sports injuries, chronic pain, and performance-related concerns. It’s a drug-free, non-invasive treatment option that can sometimes help reduce or even avoid the need for surgery.

We believe in the body’s ability to heal when it’s supported in the right way. That means improving circulation, reducing strain, and creating the conditions for better movement – all guided by both traditional principles and modern clinical research.

Every treatment is shaped around you: your body, your goals and what’s most effective for the way you live.

Startline Pain & Injury Specialists, 1B Bancroft Road, Reigate, Surrey, RH2 7RP

McTimoney Chiropractors are trained over 4 years in medical and musculoskeletal areas at undergraduate. McTimoney Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners and musculoskeletal specialists. This means they specialise in pain caused by ligaments, tendons, muscles, bones and joints. They are also trained to recognise the signs and patterns of pain that is not caused by these structures and may need further investigation.

They use a full medical case history and assessment to understand your individual case and the cause. Your Chiropractor will explain to you what structures may have been affected with your injury, & suggest what action they’d recommend. If further investigation is required your Chiropractor will refer you to the appropriate healthcare professional.

An age old question and one that is difficult to summarise in one sentence. Check out our blog post on the difference between Osteopaths, Chiropractors, & Physiotherapists.

First we’ll have a chat about what’s going on and we’ll dive deeper into your medical history to build a big picture of your health. We’ll then move on to a physical examination, which involves watching you move and maybe doing some strength testing. We will also take a look at your joints and muscles with you relaxed, lying on the couch.

Once we have an idea of what could be causing your symptoms, we will explain our thoughts and provide a diagnosis. We will then offer you a management plan which may include a mixture of manual therapy, exercise prescription and lifestyle advice. You’ll have opportunity to ask questions throughout.

We will then use the remaining time for treatment. Which may include soft tissue massage, joint articulation or exercise.

General practitioner’s methods vary from individual to individual. Similar to Physiotherapists, GPs also refer patients to Chiropractors where the evidence supports the intervention.

You don’t need a GP referral to see an Chiropractor. Chiropractos are primary health care professionals. You do not need to see a GP before going to see an Osteopath.

Yes, if the patient is beyond the 1st Trimester.

Conditions like low back pain and pelvic girdle pain are very common during pregnancy. About 20% of women have some sort of low back pain during pregnancy.

Chiropractic can be a really effective tool. With some conditions such as osteoarthritis, it can delay or even avoid the need for surgery.

In other scenarios when we are injured, in pain, or recovering from an injury or surgery, we tend to walk and move differently. This is because certain parts of the body may need to rest, so we avoid using them. Meanwhile, we load other areas of the body to compensate to keep performing our day to day tasks. This is fine in the short term, but if sustained can lead to problems. In these kind of cases Chiropractic care can help.

All Chiropractic treatment techniques aim to minimise pain and discomfort, using gentle non-traumatic techniques. It is not uncommon to feel a little sore following treatment. This usually resolves over a following 24-48 hours.

This depends on the condition and the amount of time you’ve had the problem, your Chiropractor should be able to give you a better idea during the initial consultation. A ball park time frame would be between 3-6 sessions, but this can vary above and below those numbers case by case.

Chiropractors have to complete 4-5 years training from a recognised university. They then need to take out professional insurance. Only once all of these steps are completed can you apply to the General Chiropractic Council to get their license to practice.

Chiropractors then need to complete 30 hours of clinical professional development (CPD) each year, in order to remain up to date with current best practice, & be able to renew their license with GCC.

In the UK, ‘Chiropractor’ is a protected term. Anyone referring to themselves as an Osteopath must be registered with the GOsC, or risk facing legal action from the council.

The name ‘Chiropractor’ is a protected name under the Chiropractor Act  In order to call yourself an Chiropractor, you must have completed the appropriate training, with continued professional development and be registered with the General Chiropractic Council.

Many private health insurance policies provide cover for osteopathic treatment. It may be possible to claim for a course of treatment but you should check in advance with your insurance company before seeking osteopathic treatment, in order to confirm the available level of cover.

There is no obligatory part of treatment. If you have any concerns or preferences, your Chiropractor will be more than happy to discuss these and take these into account when building your management plan. Alternative methods can always be provided.
